Museums in Budapest.

Few cities in Europe offer the visitor as culturally rich an experience as Budapest, where Eastern and Western Europe come together in a city which fascinates visitors with its intriguing history.

Budapest offers an extensive selection of interesting, beautiful and haunting museums. With almost 100 to choose from, it`s impossible to see them all in one trip, so here`s a breakdown of some of the most popular and interesting museums in Budapest.

For further details, museum opening times and admission charges, please follow links. Links open in a new window.

The largest and most famous National Museums are usually at the top of most visitors 'must see' lists and right at the top is Hungary`s National Museum, located in a vast classical style building which was purpose built in the mid-19th century. This museum has permanent displays depicting the country`s history from prehistoric to modern times.

The Hungarian National Gallery is the next large state owned museum to be sure to include on your itinerary. The gallery can be found within Buda Castle and displays a history of fine arts in Hungary.

For an international collection of art, then head for the Museum of Fine Arts which can be found in Heroes Square. The extensive displays include ancient Egyptian art, pieces from the Old Masters as well as a number of sculptures.

To understand Hungary`s suffering during the Nazi and Communist dictatorships of the 20th Century, the House of Terror was set up as a museum to both raise awareness and to remember the victims. This chilling exhibition tells the tale of those who were killed or tortured in the very building it is housed in.

Even more on Hungary`s recent past can be discovered at the Holocaust Memorial Centre, where victims of the holocaust in Hungary and the Budapest Ghetto are remembered in a very moving and informative exhibition and a visit to the Glass House Memorial Room provides more insight and information into one of the diplomats who risked all to save lives during the final year of World War II.
Of course, a visit to the former area of the Budapest Ghetto is high on many visitors lists and the Jewish Museum, housed in the building of the Budapest Great Synagogue shouldn't be missed.

If you're looking for something on the lighter side then there are a number of smaller and quirky museums in Budapest, which are worth a visit. The Royal Wine House and Wine Cellar Museum is a great visit for those who have yet to experience the grapes of Hungary.

For lovers of Art Nouveau architecture and furniture, we recommend a visit to the magnificent building, museum and coffee shop at the Bedő-Haz, Hungarian Art Nouveau House.

The Aquincum Museum is a former Roman military settlement which houses a number of intact ornaments and artefacts. Other museum highlights include the Bath Museum which houses a 2000 year old bath from Roman times.

For those travelling with children there are a number of railway and transport museums which are suitable for kids. The Children`s Railway Museum, The Transport Museum, The Hungarian Railway Museum and the Fire Brigade Museum are all great for transport enthusiasts. Children will also love the Palace of Wonders exhibition, which offers interactive and fun science displays which delight children and adults alike.

Budapest is certainly one of Europe`s most important cultural centres. The sheer number of museums is evidence of its rich and varied past. The city is popular with visitors who enjoy the range of accommodation options from small hotels to private villa holidays.
From the large national museums to smaller fun exhibitions, any visitor to Budapest is likely to enjoy a number of memorable museums during their stay.
