What is the Hash House Harriers?
A brief history
The Hash House Harriers is an international organisation, started by a group of British expats and military personnel in Kuala Lumpur in 1938. Based on the traditional "Paper Chase", the Hash was originally set up as a running group, meeting on Monday evenings and involved running a previously set trail, which included among others, false trails, short cuts and dead ends. Following a requirement from the Malay Registrar of Societies, the group was obliged to officially register a name and constitution. The name Hash House Harriers was registered, named after the Selangor Club annex, nicknamed the Hash House, where the military personnel were billeted.
On a club registration card from 1950, the constitution of the Hash House Harriers is recorded as :
* To promote physical fitness among members
* To get rid of weekend hangovers
* To acquire a good thirst and to satisfy it in beer
* To persuade the older members that they are not as old as they feel
Hashing today
There are presently almost 2,000 active Hash House Harrier groups world-wide,
meeting on a regular weekly or monthly basis, with groups on every continent.
The Budapest Hash House Harriers
The Budapest Hash House Harriers is a mixed group of expats, locals and visitors who just happen to be in town. Starting every Sunday morning at 11:30 at Batthyanyi Square, on the Buda side of the city, the meeting point is just opposite the exit of the Batthyanyi ter metro station and by the wall of the embankment, directly opposite the Hungarian Parliament building.
From there, the group leaves either by car or public transport to the start of the Hash Trail, often in the Buda Hills, sometimes inside the city of Budapest and occasionally a few kilometers outside of Budapest. Upon arrival at the starting point, the group is split up into two groups - the runners and the walkers - who meet up at various stops along the trail and eventually meet again at the finishing point.
The hilly routes are usually planned to include some interesting views and panoramas and the city trails frequently pass by several places of interest. In both cases there are 'beer stops' and other rest places along the route.
At the finishing point, the groups form a 'circle', which involves the introduction of new members (virgins) or visitors, announcements and a curious ceremony called a 'down down' - basically a 'punishment' for just about anything, including among others, using a mobile phone (technology on the run) to answering the call of nature in the forest (destroying the environment).
The person or persons who committed a 'crime' need to stand in the middle of the circle and drink the contents of a glass of beer, without pause, while the rest of the group sing one of a selection of songs. Anybody that has beer remaining in the glass needs to pour it over their head. Great fun!
Once all the announcements have been made and punishments handed out, the Hash Hymn is sung to close the official part of the proceedings, followed by lunch in a nearby restaurant for those who want to eat.
Cost to take part: 500 Hungarian Forint (just under 2 Euros), which includes bottled water and beer.
